Zionsville Little League awarded its annual scholarships to two deserving ZCHS graduating seniors at the Senior Honors Night Ceremony on May 15. Alex Sampson received the Chuck Keraga Memorial Scholarship and Abby Nolan earned the initial Judy Veatch Memorial Scholarship.
These scholarships are awarded each year to ZCHS seniors who played in Zionsville Little League. The Keraga Scholarship is awarded to a former ZLL baseball player and the Veatch Scholarship is awarded to a former ZLL softball player. Each scholarship is valued at $500 and is based on the applicant’s involvement in ZLL, their academic performance, and extra curricular activities. Each applicant must also write an essay about how their experiences in Zionsville Little League helped prepare them for college, a professional career, and family life.
These scholarships were begun to honor the memory of longtime ZLL volunteers Chuck Keraga and Judy Veatch. More information about Chuck, Judy, and these scholarships can be viewed here.
Alex, the son of Jon and Sarah Sampson, earned his scholarship through 8 years as a player in ZLL and 3 years as an umpire. Alex is also an Eagle Scout, a participant in several athletic programs at ZCHS, a member of the ZCHS Show Choirs, ZCHS Student Council, and a youth volunteer at St. Alphonsus Church. In his essay, Alex noted that the spirit of volunteerism from the adults in Zionsville Little League has influenced him to serve as an adult volunteer in his community in the future.
Abby is the daughter of Tom and Marie Nolan. She played in ZLL for seven years and served as a volunteer coach in the ZLL Challengers program for 6 years. Abby was a swimmer at ZCHS, had leadership roles in the ZCHS orchestra and the ZCHS Spanish Honor Society. She also participated in 4-H for 10 years. Abby’s essay on her ZLL experience emphasized the value of teamwork and the importance of volunteering and serving others.
