ZLL’s 12U All-Star baseball team finished with a 5-0 record to win the Shamrock Invitational in Westfield on July 12. The Eagles swept their opponents in pool play games and finished as the number one seed with three victories. Zionsville defeated Oaklandon 11-1, Westfield 15-3, and Fishers 13-5. Sam Darge and Bill Busse sparked the offense with home runs on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Eagles turned back Westfield 14-6 in the first elimination game, and won the championship with a dramatic walk-off victory over Fishers 11-10. Zionsville’s offense started fast and jumped to a 5-0 lead after 2 innings. Fishers mounted a furious barrage in the 3rd inning, taking the lead with a 6-run assault. The Eagles fought back by adding five more runs over the next three innings, including a long home run by Nick Chisholm. In the top of the 6th inning, Fishers mounted another big attack, scoring 4 runs to tie the game 10-10. With the game on the line, Cody Copeland opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and promptly stole second base. Jack Connor followed up with a long hit to knock in Copeland to give Zionsville the championship.
