ZLL’s 10U Green All-Star teamed stormed through the Lawrence Lions Grand Slam Tournament, claiming the championship with 6 convincing victories this weekend. In pool play games, the Eagles defeated Avon 13-2, New Palestine 21-6, and Lawrence 11-7. In Sunday’s single elimination tournament, Zionsville knocked out First Baptist 16-5, Mooresville 13-1, and Skiles Test Park 12-2 to take the crown.
The Eagles received great pitching performances in the pool play games from Mitchell Chappell, Elijah Lang, Billy Busse, Alex Michie, Jeb Garrett, and TJ Newnum. For the tournament games Garrett, Jack Nelson, Andrew Paul and Caleb Everson were lights out – surrendering only 8 runs in the three games.
The offensive attack from the Eagles was decisive. Every player had several big hits and scored bundles of runs during several offensive barrages. Michie, Nelson and Newnum led the team with several long drives and hard hits, as did Brian Behrens and Sam Stanczykiewicz.
On defense, the team was steady and solid, making few errors. The infielders continually played tight defense with a number of good plays from Chappell at 3rd base, Garrett and Paul at shortstop, Behrens at 2nd base, and Nelson or Michie at first. Catching duties were handled strongly by Busse, Everson, Paul, and Stanczykiewicz.
