The Zionsville Eagles 10U baseball team won the Pioneer All-Star Classic the weekend of June 29-July 1st. The Eagles battled through 100 degree temperatures and 6 games in 3 days. Along the way the Eagles were able to defeat Whiteland, Edgewood, Plainfield, Brown County and Avon. The only loss came in the pool play game against Avon.
The Championship game was a dramatic victory for the Eagles. After a scoreless first inning of great defense by Zionsville and Avon the Eagles got things going on three big hits from Zach Mullens, Will Veit and Will Pfister. Andrew Davis added another run in the 3rd inning to go up 4-1. Will Veit pitched three great innings only allowing 1 run that was complimented by by great defense from Jacob Livesay in Left field.
The bats got rolling again in the 4th inning when the Eagles got 4 more runs from great base running from Veit, Caleb Berrong, Livesay and a hit from Kyle Harmon. Seth Douglas worked the middle innings perfectly with a combination of fast balls and change up pitches and set the Eagles up for a dramatic finish.
After Mullens scored in the 5th inning the Eagles found themselves with a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the last inning. Avon battled with a couple of great hits to close the lead to 9-8. Had it not been for an amazing play from Right field from Josh Carney to Will Pfister and then in to Ian Sands tagging the runner out at home, the game would have been tied. Sam Benedict then worked his magic against the Orioles best hitter, who already had 1 home run in the game. Sammy was able to strike out the big hitter on 3 straight inside fast balls to close out the championship.
