Three ZLL teams advance to Sweet Sixteen of the Keraga Cup

Three of Zionsville Little League’s six Majors baseball teams have advance to the Sweet Sixteen of Little League District 8’s annual Keraga Cup.  The Daahl Roofing Brewers, the Schulte Insurance Cardinals, and the B Paul Consulting Red Sox survived the grueling first two rounds of play on Saturday to advance to the third round on Tuesday May 13.

The Keraga Cup, named in honor of former ZLL Board President Chuck Keraga, is a single elimination tournament of all District 8 rec Majors teams with games held at the various parks in the District.  Seventy six teams started in the tournament last week and now only sixteen remain.  The tournament games are played on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, when a new tournament champion will be crowned.

The Brewers, managed by Scott Williams, advanced on Saturday by defeating the Avon Royals and the Danville Pirates.  They play again on Tuesday May 13 against the Avon Yankees on Field 2 at Lions’ Park.  If they win, they will play the winner of the Broad Ripple Blue Jays and TriWest Royal contest.

The Cardinals, managed by Stacey Behrens, moved through the tourney by virtue of a forfeit and a defeat of the Washington Township Mets on Saturday.  The Redbirds will face the Broad Ripple Rangers at Broad Ripple on Tuesday evening.  If the Cards win, they will play the winner of the Broad Ripple Brewers and Brownsburg Pirates.

The Red Sox, under manager Rob Schein, survived Saturday with wins over the Plainfield Twins and Avon Dodgers.  The Sox take on the Eagle Creek Mariners at Eagle Creek on Tuesday.  If Red Sox win, they will play either the Avon Cubs or Danville Reds.

The three other ZLL Majors teams participated in the tournament.  The Weber Concrete Construction Dodgers won their play-in game last Thursday, but lost a first round matchup to the Brownsburg Rockies.  The Connor Home Renovations Orioles won their first round game against Washington Township Nationals, but lost to the Broad Ripple Blue Jays Saturday afternoon.  The Subway Giants fell in a tight loss to the Avon Reds.

A complete Keraga Cup bracket can be viewed on the District 8 web site Keraga Cup page.

District also runs a similar event for softball called the President’s Cup.  ZLL is not participating in the President’s Cup this year due to scheduling conflicts.

ZLL did not participate in the Keraga Cup in 2013, but in 2012, the ZLL A’s won the tournament.
