Offenses dominate: Indians outscore Rays to win Minor A Championship

The bats were busy on Field 2 Saturday for the Minor A championship game, and when the dust cleared the Indians had an 18-9 win over the Rays. The teams banged out 41 hits between them, as well as eight for extra bases.

Ten runs in the opening three innings allowed the Indians to come out ahead in the end. An RBI single by Aydan McCormick, a two-run double by Joe Williams, an RBI single by Bennett McAfee, an RBI single by Anthony Graham, and an RBI single by Andrew Weaver in the first inning fueled the Indians’ offense early. Matthew Gummere racked up three RBIs on three hits for the Indians. He singled in the first and fourth innings and tripled in the fifth inning. All of the Indians reached base safely, including Evan Magnusen on an RBI single in the 3rd inning.

Four of the Rays runs crossed the plate in the top half of the third, making the score 6-5. An RBI single by Aidan Hatcher, a two-run single by Brody Towns, and an RBI single by Will Grieser sparked the Rays’ rally.

It didn’t take long for the Indians to answer as they scored four runs of their own in the third. The Indians scored on an RBI double by Williams, an RBI single by McAfee, and a two-run single by A. Weaver.  The Indians built upon their lead with six runs in the fifth. Jackson Barker singled, plating Jacob Walter to start the inning. That was followed up by Jay Bumgarner’s single, scoring Jack Weaver.

In the game’s most exciting moment, Scotty Wiley reached base for his first hit of the season and almost scored later in the inning but was tagged out by the pitcher, Jackson Woehr, while trying to score from third.
